A story I rarely share. I see many people attack the idea of political correctness, but I’d like to share how this shift in discourse has impacted my life for the better.

When I was a lot younger, I struggled in school. The teachers believed that I had a learning disability because it took me a lot longer to grasp certain concepts, and I always had trouble keeping focus. As a result, I was often picked on. The other kids would frequently ask me “are you retarded?” and laugh amongst themselves.

Though I hate to admit it, there were many afternoons that I would come home in tears over those words. It destroyed my confidence as a young child, and for many years I truly believed that I was incapable of learning.

Needless to say, it was a difficult period in my life to overcome. But I pulled through. Today, those who know me would never guess I went through such an experience in school. Yet, despite having occurred so long ago in my life, the word “retarded” still manages to remind me of my struggle as a child.

Fortunately, it’s an uncommon word today. Most people have come to recognize that it’s highly offensive and insensitive to those truly struggling with a disability. In a way, we have the movement in political correctness to thank for it. It’s for this reason that I welcome a more sensitive approach to discourse, whether we call it political correctness, tolerance, or by any other name.

That’s been my experience at least—a story I hardly ever tell. Oddly enough, I feel comfortable sharing it among this group. Now I’m curious to hear your experience. How has political correctness impacted your life, whether good or bad?
