Started my first job right before the Great Recession. Scared to death of the next one. I remember how excited I was after finishing school and starting my first job. It was the Fall of '07 and I landed an interview as a junior analyst at a firm I was dying to work with. I was beyond ecstatic when I got the job. I remember calling my mom in tears that day to share the news 😅

Things couldn't have been better. I loved the work, I loved my colleagues, I loved it all! Then...just about a year after I started, I got let go. The economy turned south—and fast! I remember watching the news when Lehman Brothers failed and thinking the whole financial industry was at the brink of collapse. And I remember just how difficult it was to find a job during the whole mess. "It's a tough economy" was every company's excuse.

Fast forward 10 years later and I'm back on my feet, at a firm I'm absolutely in love with. This time around, I'm in a much better situation financially in the event another recession comes around. But, when I look around the office, I realize how hard it would hit me if I were to be let go. Every time I read the news, I get this anxious feeling that reminds me of 2008, and I'm crossing my fingers I don't have to live through that again 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

A happy accident
@Anamora I can relate very closely to that. But I really don’t think we’ll see another 2008-type scenario, though. That was a real systemic issue with the financial markets, and new regulations have made those markets much more resilient. But recessions do happen and another’s probably somewhere around the corner. Doesn’t mean it has to be a big one, but it’s good to hear that you’re prepared financially for a worst case scenario

Always open
@Anamora The timing must’ve been tough. I remember hearing the whole “tough economy” thing too. Every company used that line. Some to let people go, others to reject applicants. But the worst among them used it to give their employees more work and cut their pay

Living a new life
@Anamora As we wrap up the year, the US economy looks to be in great shape. Record numbers all around. I hope that provides some relief. Let’s just hope things stay great going into the 2020 elections, if you know what I mean.

@Anamora It’ll come again at some point. Everyone needs to get their money right, including me so they don’t take the hit
